Ndegwa Njiru, a prominent lawyer and ally of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, has openly criticized the decision to nominate Raila Odinga as Kenya’s candidate for the position of African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson.
His comments have sparked debate as Kenyans and the African community await the outcome of this high-profile nomination.
Earlier this year, President William Ruto’s government announced Raila Odinga, former Prime Minister and opposition leader, as the country's choice for the AU top position.
This move was seen as a major development, considering Raila’s long history in Kenyan politics and his significant role in regional diplomacy. However, despite this recognition, not everyone agrees with his suitability for the role.
Ndegwa Njiru, a vocal lawyer known for his ties to the previous administration, believes Kenya made the wrong choice.
According to him, Raila is "too weak" to lead the African Union, especially at a time when the organization faces several critical challenges.
He argued that the role requires a leader with strong Pan-Africanist values and the ability to represent Africa effectively on the global stage.
Njiru further stated that Kenya should have considered supporting someone like Professor PLO Lumumba, a renowned Pan-Africanist and public intellectual, for the AUC chairperson position.
He argued that Lumumba possesses the brilliance, commitment, and passion required to take on such a high-ranking position.
In his criticism, Njiru said, "Instead of backing someone strong, smart, and committed to the Pan-African cause, we are sending someone weak, colourless, and pale."
His strong words left many Kenyans divided, with some supporting his view while others saw his remarks as unfair to Raila Odinga, who has had a distinguished political career spanning decades.
