A disturbing incident has sparked outrage in Changuu Village, Makueni County, where a family is demanding justice for Mwendwa Muteti, a boda boda rider who was allegedly assaulted while in police custody. The incident, which occurred at Matiliku Police Station, involved a police officer and Muteti, with claims that a personal dispute over a woman led to the assault.
The confrontation reportedly began in a local bar in Matiliku Township. According to witnesses, the dispute erupted between Muteti and a police officer over a woman they both had an interest in. The argument escalated quickly, leading to a physical altercation. The officer, in an attempt to assert dominance, arrested Muteti and took him into custody at Matiliku Police Station.
Eyewitnesses claim that the officer acted out of jealousy and personal vendetta, rather than following proper law enforcement procedures.
“They were arguing loudly over the woman, and before we knew it, Muteti was handcuffed and dragged away,” said a local resident who witnessed the altercation.
Once Muteti was placed in the holding cell, things took a shocking turn. It is alleged that the officer retrieved a kitchen knife from his home and used it to shave Muteti’s head while in custody.
According to reports, the officer inflicted severe cuts on Muteti’s head, leaving him injured and bleeding.
Locals, particularly boda boda operators who knew Muteti, were outraged by the officer's actions. Upon learning about the incident, they rushed to the police station and took Muteti to Matiliku Sub-county Hospital for urgent medical treatment.
At Matiliku Sub-county Hospital, Leonard Makau, the Medical Superintendent, confirmed that Muteti had suffered severe head injuries when he arrived. He was bleeding heavily from the wounds on his scalp, and immediate medical attention was required to stabilize his condition. “He was in bad shape when he got to us, but we managed to stop the bleeding and clean the wounds,” said Dr. Makau.
Fortunately, the hospital staff acted swiftly, and Muteti’s condition improved after treatment. However, the incident has left his family traumatized, as they seek justice for what they describe as an abuse of power by a law enforcement officer.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage among local leaders, human rights groups, and residents of Changuu Village. Muteti’s family is demanding a full investigation into the officer’s actions, accusing him of using his position to settle personal scores. They argue that the assault was not only unjust but also a violation of Muteti’s human rights.
Local residents have expressed concern about police misconduct, with many calling for reforms in the police service.
“It is shocking that an officer, whose job is to protect the public, can act in such a brutal manner. This is an abuse of power, and we will not rest until justice is served,” said a community leader in Matiliku.
The boda boda community, which plays a significant role in local transport, has been particularly vocal about the need for justice. Many of them have expressed frustration with the police, accusing some officers of frequently abusing their authority and mistreating citizens.
“We want the government to take this matter seriously. Police officers should protect us, not harm us,” said one boda boda operator.
In response to the public outcry, local leaders have called on the National Police Service to launch an immediate investigation into the incident. The public is demanding that the officer involved in the assault be suspended and face legal action for his behavior.
Human rights groups have also joined the calls for justice, urging the police to ensure that officers are held accountable for their actions. They argue that incidents like these erode public trust in law enforcement and can lead to further abuses if not addressed.
