The MPs issued a statement on September 12, 2024, endorsing Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as the new leader for the Mt Kenya region, a move that has sparked controversy.
In a response released on September 13, Wamuchomba dismissed the Nyahururu declaration made by the MPs as nothing more than “hot air.” She argued that the real issues affecting the region's constituents were being ignored while political maneuvering took center stage.
The Nyahururu declaration declared that Kithure Kindiki should be the main link between the Mt Kenya region and the national government. This decision has not been well received by.
Wamuchomba, who believes that the focus should be on pressing local issues rather than shifting political allegiances. She has criticized the MPs for their lack of engagement with their voters and for being more interested in political positioning than in addressing real concerns.
According to Wamuchomba, the MPs lost touch with their voters when they supported the Finance Bills of 2023 and 2024, which were widely seen as unfavorable.
She pointed out that instead of holding a press conference to disown Gachagua, the MPs should have used their platform to address the critical issues facing their constituents.
These include the mysterious disappearance of children from Hillside Endarasha Academy after a fire and the current eviction of traders from Marikiti Market.
Wamuchomba argued that these issues should be the MPs' primary concern, rather than engaging in political disputes.
Wamuchomba also highlighted the plight of victims from various tragedies, including house demolitions in Mathare, Pipeline, and the Mai Mahiu dam.
She believes that the MPs should have advocated for fair treatment and support for these victims, rather than focusing on political disagreements.
The MP accused the 48 MPs of using the press conference to distract from their failure to address urgent local problems.
She suggested that their actions were designed to unsettle Gachagua and create a more favorable environment for their own political ambitions. In her view, this kind of political maneuvering does not benefit the people they represent.
She emphasized that the primary goal should be to ensure that voters receive the benefits promised by the government, particularly in sectors like coffee, milk, and tea.
The MPs who supported the Nyahururu declaration have argued that Gachagua’s leadership has been focused on personal ambitions rather than the collective needs of the Mt Kenya region.
They believe that Kindiki, as the new leader, will be better positioned to advocate for the region's interests and secure necessary resources from the national government.
Despite these arguments, Wamuchomba remains firm in her belief that addressing local issues should be the MPs' top priority. She argues that political strategies and declarations should not come at the expense of addressing the pressing needs of the community.
