Kathiani Member of Parliament Robert Mbui has cast doubt on President William Ruto's religious image, accusing him of using faith for political gain.
Mbui, speaking during an interview on Citizen TV's Daybreak show, claimed that Ruto, despite portraying himself as a devout Christian, has not governed in a way that reflects true religious values.
Since his time as Deputy President, Ruto has been known for attending church services, contributing to fundraisers, and publicly embracing his Christian faith.
However, Mbui, who is part of the opposition, believes that Ruto’s religious persona was simply a tactic to gain public favor, particularly during election campaigns.
He argued that if Ruto and his government were as God-fearing as they claim, Kenyans would not be facing the economic and social hardships they are currently enduring.
Mbui's main concern centers around the contrast between Ruto’s religious image and the reality of his administration’s policies. He pointed out that under Ruto’s leadership, Kenyans are dealing with a significant rise in the cost of living, increased taxes, and economic challenges.
According to Mbui, these struggles are evidence that the government’s decisions do not align with the values of compassion and justice often associated with religious leadership.
"Kenya Kwanza abused the church by buying church leaders," Mbui stated during the interview. He referenced instances where religious leaders were allegedly influenced to support Ruto's campaigns and criticized the Kenya Kwanza coalition for what he sees as manipulation of religious institutions.
Mbui believes that Ruto’s government has failed to live up to the high moral and ethical standards expected of leaders who publicly proclaim their faith.
The MP also recalled how, during the 2022 election campaigns, there was a lot of excitement around Ruto’s faith, with some Kenya Kwanza supporters using slogans that hinted at divine intervention in their political journey. However, Mbui feels that the reality of the situation has not matched those early promises.
"There was a pretense of being religious, but God-fearing people would not punish Kenyans as much as this regime," he added, expressing his disappointment in the administration’s approach to governance.
Mbui did not stop at criticizing Ruto’s government. He also revealed that his party, Wiper, has made a clear decision about the 2027 general election.
According to him, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka will be their presidential candidate, and they are determined to replace Ruto with Kalonzo.
This is a significant statement, as it confirms Kalonzo’s intentions to run for the presidency, ending months of speculation about his political plans.
Mbui’s declaration suggests that Wiper is positioning itself as a major player in the upcoming election and is ready to challenge Ruto’s re-election bid.
“Kalonzo Musyoka will vie for the presidency in 2027. We have now declared as the Wiper Party," Mbui confidently stated.
The Wiper Party is part of the opposition, and it has been a vocal critic of the Kenya Kwanza government since Ruto took office. Kalonzo Musyoka, a seasoned politician, has run for president before, and his potential candidacy in 2027 will likely draw significant attention.
Mbui’s announcement marks the beginning of what is expected to be a long and intense political campaign, as the country prepares for the next general election.
