Murang’a Woman Representative Betty Maina has stirred the political landscape by boldly declaring that Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's days in office are numbered.
In a passionate speech during a public event, she claimed that Gachagua’s fate is sealed and that the process to remove him from office is inevitable. Her remarks have sent shockwaves across the political sphere, adding fuel to the ongoing conversations surrounding the Deputy President’s performance and political future.
Maina's speech comes on the heels of a cryptic statement made by Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi, who had earlier suggested that Gachagua’s time was running out. Sudi indicated that Gachagua had two weeks before he would be forced to "take the first ticket home." Maina backed Sudi's sentiments, emphasizing that the Deputy President's tenure was effectively over, and his removal was only a matter of time.
“If there’s anyone who is going home, it’s Rigathi. He’s the one who needs to take the first ticket home. Oscar Sudi gave him two weeks, and we are telling him that those two weeks are enough; he should pack and leave,” she declared during her address to the gathered crowd, braving the heavy downpour as she spoke.
Maina did not mince words when criticizing the Deputy President. She accused Gachagua of arrogance and chest-thumping, claiming he had overstepped his authority and was acting as though he was untouchable.
According to Maina, Gachagua's attitude has alienated him from not only his political peers but also the public, particularly in his home region of Mt. Keny
“Rigahi should stop threatening people. He shouldn’t tell us about votes; only God controls our destiny, not him. Even when we started, we didn’t need him to stand. He came to find us standing. It’s time for him to stop boasting and beating his chest in front of the President. His time is done, and he should be prepared to go home,” she added.
The Murang’a Woman Representative further claimed that Gachagua’s political influence had diminished significantly, even in his own backyard. She referenced her own relationship with Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi, Gachagua’s successor, as evidence that Gachagua had lost support in his home constituency.
"I am the wife of his member of Parliament, and I can tell you, he has been rejected even at home," Maina boldly declared, noting that Gachagua no longer enjoys the political backing he once had.
While Maina criticized Gachagua's leadership, she was quick to reassure the Mt. Kenya region that they have no shortage of capable leaders who could step into the role of Deputy President. She mentioned several potential successors, including Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro.
"Don’t think that we from the mountain don’t have leaders. We have Kindiki Kithure, Kimani Ichung’wah, and Ndindi Nyoro, all of whom are more than capable of taking up the Deputy President’s role. The seat will stay in Mt. Kenya, and we have leaders who will guide us in the right direction," Maina reassured the crowd.
She also appealed to President William Ruto, asking him to allow leaders from the Mt. Kenya region to handle the matter of Gachagua's impeachment, implying that it was an internal issue that should be managed within the region's political framework.
Maina’s remarks have sparked reactions from various political figures. Uasin Gishu Woman Representative Gladys Boss Shollei, in a separate statement, had earlier confirmed that Gachagua’s impeachment was already a "done deal." Shollei, who has been vocal about her stance on Gachagua, even stated that she would personally oversee the impeachment process. Her comments align with those of Oscar Sudi, who had foreshadowed Gachagua’s departure.
“There is no question about it. Gachagua will be impeached. And I will be in charge of the impeachment motion,” Shollei said confidently, sending a clear message to the Deputy President.
While some leaders, like Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo, have suggested that if Gachagua is impeached, President William Ruto should also be removed from office since they were elected as a team, others have downplayed the impeachment talk. Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah, one of the potential successors mentioned by Maina, dismissed the impeachment rumors, claiming that there were no such plans.
“There is no impeachment motion against Gachagua. He is calling for his own impeachment,” Ichung’wah remarked, indicating that some of the noise surrounding the Deputy President’s removal might be exaggerated.
