Nairobi Protests Turn Violent as City Stores Set Ablaze Amid Relocation Dispute

Nairobi City has been rocked by violent protests after traders clashed with local authorities over a controversial relocation order. On the morning of September 12, 2024, the Nairobi City County stores at Wakulima Market were set on fire by unknown individuals. 

This incident unfolded as traders from Wakulima and Marikiti markets took to the streets to oppose the county government's directive to move their businesses.

The protests began around 3 a.m. when traders, mostly small-scale vendors known locally as "mama mbogas," started lighting bonfires on major roads, including Haile Selassie Avenue and Jogoo Road. 

Their actions led to severe traffic disruptions in Nairobi's city center. The traders were reacting to a notice issued by Acting County Secretary Godfrey Akumali, which ordered them to relocate to a new market on Kangundo Road.

The relocation plan is part of an effort by the county government to reduce congestion in Nairobi's central business district. However, many traders are unhappy with the decision. 

They argue that those who have already moved to Kangundo Road have faced hostile reactions from local residents. This has fueled their anger and led to the ongoing demonstrations.

In response to the protests, police deployed anti-riot units to the area. Officers used teargas to disperse the crowds, but the situation remained tense.

By the time of reporting, no vehicles were being allowed to enter or exit the central business district through the roads affected by the protests.

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has voiced his support for the protesting traders. He has called on the county government to respect the traders' rights to do business and to reconsider the relocation order. 

Owino's support has added a political dimension to the unrest, highlighting the growing frustration among small business owners in Nairobi.

Governor Johnson Sakaja has not yet commented on the situation. His silence has left many wondering how the county government plans to address the escalating conflict. The lack of a clear response from the authorities only adds to the uncertainty surrounding the issue.

The fires at Wakulima Market mark a dramatic escalation in the protests, reflecting the deep frustration of the traders with the government's relocation plan. The situation remains volatile, and it is unclear how it will be resolved.
