Ruto-Raila Truce Tested: Mt Kenya UDA Legislators Take Stand Ahead of 2027 Elections

As Kenya approaches the 2027 general elections, political tensions are escalating, particularly within the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Recently, two UDA legislators from the Mt Kenya region have openly criticized ODM politicians, indicating a growing rift that could impact the upcoming elections.

The conflict centers around Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who has become a focal point of controversy.

UDA legislators Joe Nyutu, representing Murang'a, and Karungo Wa Thangwa from Kiambu, have voiced their strong support for Gachagua and criticized ODM members for what they describe as disrespectful behavior towards him.

During President William Ruto's recent four-day tour of the Nyanza region, Wa Thangwa expressed his displeasure over comments made by ODM politicians.

He claimed that some ODM leaders mocked Gachagua indirectly, creating unnecessary divisions among political groups.

Wa Thangwa stressed that despite these criticisms, President Ruto’s administration is committed to fostering unity and diversity across Kenya.

“It’s disheartening to see some Mt Kenya leaders directing their harsh criticism towards our own Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua during the Nyanza tour,” Wa Thangwa said. “While the DP is being warmly welcomed by all during this visit, a few leader-haters are attempting to create divisions. However, let me assure you that when these tours conclude, we will address these issues head-on.”

Joe Nyutu echoed Wa Thangwa’s sentiments, adding that ODM should be more respectful towards Gachagua. Nyutu specifically named Suna East MP Junet Mohammed and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga as individuals who were indirectly criticizing Gachagua. He warned that while ODM has been given space, respect for Gachagua is crucial.

“We have given ODM some space, but they must respect the first wife in this partnership,” Nyutu said. “We were not happy with how Gladys Wanga and Junet disrespected Gachagua in Nyanza.”

This dispute comes amid broader political debates regarding the direction of President Ruto's administration.

ODM figures like Wanga, Mohammed, and Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nasir have criticized Ruto’s policies, arguing that he has moved away from the previous political entitlements and made controversial appointments of ODM members to his Cabinet.

The ongoing tensions between UDA and ODM highlight the complex and often contentious nature of Kenyan politics. With the 2027 elections on the horizon, these disputes are likely to shape the political landscape and influence voter sentiment.
