The deceased, identified as Samwel Owino Mwanda, was estimated to be between 60 and 65 years old. His body was found hanging from a tree on the morning of Thursday, September 19, 2024.
The tragic incident was first reported by Mwanda’s employee, who found the body after returning from morning chores. The employee had been instructed by Mwanda earlier that morning to milk the cows and prepare breakfast.
When the worker returned with the breakfast, they were shocked to find Mwanda’s lifeless body hanging from a tree in the compound. The body was suspended using a sisal rope.
Immediately after the discovery, the employee informed the neighbors and local authorities. One of the neighbors, alarmed by the commotion, quickly notified the area chief, Joseph Mboga.
The chief arrived at the scene and confirmed the incident. According to Chief Mboga, the lecturer had only recently returned from Nairobi, leaving his family behind.
“There were no signs of any struggle or disturbance before the incident,” Mboga reported.
He added that Mwanda appeared calm that morning and had even given the employee instructions as usual.
While no suicide note was found at the scene, authorities suspect that the lecturer’s death may have been linked to a long-standing land dispute.
Chief Mboga said that Mwanda had relocated from his ancestral home in Nyang’iela, Kotieno Konuong’a Location, to Karabach, where he had been residing.
It is believed that the land dispute could have contributed to his distress, although this is still under investigation.
The chief expressed his concern over the incident, urging residents to speak out and seek help when facing challenges, rather than resorting to drastic actions such as suicide.
He emphasized that there are resources available for people struggling with personal issues and that they should reach out to family, friends, or counselors for support.
Chief Mboga reiterated that, based on accounts from the employee and neighbors, there were no signs of any confrontation or disturbances on the day of the incident.
The employee had last interacted with Mwanda when he gave him tasks for the day. The discovery of the body came as a shock to the community, who did not suspect that Mwanda was going through such emotional turmoil.
After authorities were informed, Mwanda’s body was transferred to Rachuonyo Sub County Hospital mortuary, where it will be preserved pending further investigations.
The local administration will continue to look into the case to uncover more details about the circumstances surrounding his death.
Following this unfortunate incident, Chief Mboga once again called upon residents to reach out for assistance when faced with emotional or financial pressures.
He acknowledged that many people struggle with personal issues, but taking one’s life is never a solution. He encouraged the community to be more open about their challenges and to seek support from trusted individuals or professionals.
