Will Gachagua’s Ouster Pull Ruto Into the Political Storm?

There has been a rising political tension in Kenya regarding a potential impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Allegedly, a section of Mt. Kenya MPs has been plotting to remove him from office. However, the implications of such a move could go beyond Gachagua, potentially pulling President William Ruto into the fray. This has sparked national debate, with major political players weighing in.

Gachagua claims that a secret meeting was held in Nyahururu, where about 48 MPs from the Mt. Kenya region discussed plans to oust him. These legislators are said to favor Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as the link between the region and the president, over Gachagua. According to Gachagua, the MPs in attendance were coerced into supporting the impeachment plan.

Despite this, Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has denied the existence of any scheme to remove the deputy president, calling the accusations baseless. Nevertheless, Gachagua insists the plot is real, viewing the government's denial as a "smokescreen.

The Kenya African National Union (Kanu) has entered the conversation, suggesting that if the impeachment of Gachagua proceeds, President Ruto should also be held accountable. The party argues that Ruto and Gachagua were elected as a team in 2022, and any impeachment should involve both leaders. Kanu further claims that Gachagua’s removal would set a dangerous precedent, potentially destabilizing the executive branch of the government.

Speaking from his official residence, Gachagua appeared to accept his fate, stating that if Parliament votes for his removal, he will comply. However, he expressed concerns over the timing of the discussions, noting that the country is facing numerous challenges that require urgent attention. He questioned why leaders would prioritize his impeachment over more pressing issues such as healthcare and the economy.

Gachagua emphasized that he is determined to continue serving the people, regardless of the political pressures. He also denied accusations that he was collaborating with political rivals to undermine sitting MPs, describing these claims as mere distractions.

Kanu and Gachagua both highlighted the pressing issues facing Kenya. Kanu pointed out the ongoing controversy surrounding the proposed takeover of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) by India's Adani Group, and the dissatisfaction over the new university funding model. Additionally, the state of Kenya’s public healthcare system, particularly following the recent death of a medical intern, has drawn widespread criticism.

Gachagua echoed these concerns, stating that it is insensitive for leaders to focus on political infighting when the nation needs urgent reforms and attention to its challenges. He urged unity within the government to deliver on promises made to the Kenyan people during the 2022 elections.
