Big Blow To Gachagua As Kindiki Set To Take Oath Tomorrow As The New Deputy President

Kithure Kindiki is expected to take the oath as Kenya's new Deputy President on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi.

This will happen just one day after the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, marking a quick change in the country’s leadership.

Sources close to the event have confirmed that President William Ruto is keen on speeding up the transition, ensuring that Kindiki steps into office as soon as possible.

However, there are still uncertainties because the High Court issued orders that might affect the ceremony.

Despite this, preparations are already in progress, as shown by a video shared by Moses Kuria, a senior government advisor, showing the setup at Uhuru Gardens.

Kindiki’s appointment was approved by the National Assembly on Friday, October 18, 2024. In the vote, 236 MPs gave their support for his nomination, which took place after a minor technical problem during the electronic voting process.

Speaker Moses Wetangula announced the results, confirming that the nomination had passed successfully, allowing Kindiki to officially replace Gachagua.

The ceremony will follow Article 148 of Kenya’s Constitution, which requires that the Deputy President be sworn in by the Chief Justice or their representative.

This quick swearing-in is aimed at stabilizing the country's leadership during this politically charged time.

Although Kindiki's swearing-in is moving ahead, Rigathi Gachagua’s removal remains controversial.

Gachagua, who is currently hospitalized at Karen Hospital, is fighting to overturn his impeachment.

He has reportedly been suffering from chest pains, adding a dramatic element to the tense political atmosphere. His legal team is working to challenge his ouster in court.

Born on July 16, 1972, in Tharaka Constituency, Kindiki has a long history of public service.

He previously served as the Interior Cabinet Secretary and is well-versed in the country's governance. He also has extensive experience as a lawyer, having represented clients both in Kenya and internationally.

Kindiki’s close ties with President Ruto, whom he defended during the International Criminal Court case, have further strengthened his position as Ruto's ally.
