A group of over 600 women from Kirinyaga County have come together to support their governor, Anne Waiguru, as the next Deputy President if Rigathi Gachagua is impeached.
The women, hailing from the constituencies of Gichugu, Mwea, Ndia, and Kirinyaga Central, held a meeting in Kamiigua, Kutus, where they expressed their confidence in Waiguru's leadership and suitability for the role.
Led by Hadija Wanjiru, the women emphasized that they hold no personal grudge against Gachagua, but are merely responding to the current political situation.
“We have nothing against the Deputy President, but given the way things are unfolding, we feel that Anne Waiguru is the best candidate to take over if the Senate upholds his impeachment,” Wanjiru said during the gathering.
This call comes as the Senate prepares to debate the impeachment motion against Gachagua, which was recently approved by the National Assembly.
The women argued that Waiguru’s strong leadership as the Devolution Cabinet Secretary, as well as her current position as Governor of Kirinyaga, makes her a natural fit for the position of Deputy President.
Mary Nyawira, another supporter, clarified that their initiative should not be seen as an attack on Gachagua.
“We are not fighting the Deputy President, but the political situation as it stands leaves us little hope in his continued leadership. We believe it’s time for fresh leadership,” she added.
The women further pointed out that despite their own daughter, Martha Karua, running for Deputy President in the 2022 elections as Raila Odinga’s running mate, they had still supported President William Ruto.
Now, they are asking for Waiguru to be considered for the second-highest office in the land.
Waiguru, who has built a reputation as a capable and transformative leader, continues to receive endorsements from various women leaders across the country.
Her supporters highlight her consistent performance in managing the affairs of Kirinyaga County and believe she is ready for national leadership.
This growing support comes as the Senate’s decision on Gachagua’s impeachment draws closer, potentially opening up an opportunity for Waiguru to rise to the position of Deputy President if the impeachment is successful.
The women’s campaign is just one of many as the political landscape continues to shift in response to the current situation.
