During the Senate session on October 17, 2024, Methu cautioned President William Ruto that removing Gachagua from office would result in severe political damage.
Methu argued that the charges presented against Gachagua were weak and did not warrant impeachment.
He pointed out that there was no evidence of Gachagua being insubordinate or disrespectful toward President Ruto.
In his view, the impeachment process was driven by political motives rather than serious misconduct. "Has the president ever complained about his deputy being insubordinate? No," Methu stated.
He warned that the political separation Ruto is seeking could have far-reaching consequences.
Despite his warnings, the Senate voted late on October 17 to approve the impeachment motion against Gachagua, making him the first deputy president to be impeached under Kenya’s 2010 Constitution.
Senators found Gachagua guilty of five out of 11 charges, leading to his removal from office. Speaker Amason Kingi confirmed that the impeachment had passed with a two-thirds majority, effectively ending Gachagua’s tenure.
Methu further warned that while the president might get the political "divorce" he is seeking, it would come at a heavy cost.
"The consequences will be painful, hurtful, and catastrophic, and there will be casualties," Methu added.
He expressed concern that many, including himself and other political leaders, could be among those affected by the fallout.
With Gachagua out of office, President Ruto has nominated Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki to take over as the new deputy president.
Kindiki is set to be sworn in on October 19, 2024, to fill the position left vacant by Gachagua's impeachment.
The impeachment of Gachagua marks a significant moment in Kenya’s political history, and it remains to be seen how this development will impact the country’s political landscape.
Gachagua has vowed to challenge his removal in court, adding another layer of uncertainty to the situation.
Political observers are now waiting to see how this event will affect President Ruto's administration and the future of his political alliances.
