Drama In Kisii As Matatu Driver Escaping Police Drives Into Church Compound

A peaceful church service in Kisii turned chaotic after a matatu driver fleeing from police drove into the church compound and attempted to hide among the worshippers. 

The driver, who was transporting passengers, took an unexpected turn into the churchyard, hoping to evade the officers.

The incident began when the matatu driver noticed a police vehicle nearby as he was heading from Kisii toward Gesoso. 

On spotting the police, the driver made a sudden U-turn, choosing to drive on the wrong lane toward Nyabururu. 

This unusual action caught the attention of the police, who decided to pursue him. The police vehicle, which was originally en route to the Kisii Law Courts to transport prisoners for case mentions, diverted its course to chase the matatu, suspecting something suspicious about the driver’s behavior.

As the chase intensified, the driver turned into a church compound and stopped the vehicle, leaving his passengers inside. 

In a quick attempt to evade capture, he got out of the matatu and blended into the congregation gathered for prayer. 

However, the police followed him onto the church grounds, determined to locate him despite the ongoing service.

The parish priest expressed deep frustration and disappointment with the police officers, stating that their actions disrupted a peaceful worship session. 

According to the priest, the officers showed little regard for the sanctity of the church as they searched through the congregation in pursuit of the driver. 

“They entered the church while Christians were praying and continued their operation. We condemn this act,” he said, highlighting the disturbance it caused to the worshippers.

The area police commander responded, explaining that the police had followed the driver out of concern for public safety. 

He noted that the driver’s sudden change of route and direction raised suspicions about what might be in the vehicle or why the driver was so keen to avoid law enforcement. 

Despite understanding the priest’s frustrations, the commander emphasized that the officers were simply doing their duty by pursuing a potentially dangerous suspect.

This unusual incident has sparked discussions about the need for law enforcement to respect sacred spaces and maintain a balance between public safety and religious rights. 

Both the church community and local residents expressed dismay over the police chase invading a place of worship, calling for a more respectful approach to handling similar situations in the future.
