During his address, Wandayi emphasized that ODM is fully committed to working with the Kenya Kwanza government and that this collaboration will extend beyond the 2027 election. “Mimi nina uhakika uhusiano wetu wa kisiasa utadumu kabisa beyond next elections," said Wandayi in Swahili. Loosely translated, he expressed his confidence in the partnership, stating that ODM has firmly aligned with Ruto’s government and will continue to back the President’s leadership even after the next election.
Wandayi’s remarks follow ODM's decision to work closely with President Ruto, a shift that has raised eyebrows given the traditionally adversarial relationship between ODM and Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA). The CS underscored that this alignment is not by chance, but rather a strategic decision that serves the broader interests of the country.
“Sisi tuko ndani ya serikali na serikali iko imara. Serikali haina wasiwasi hata kidogo,” Wandayi continued, reassuring the public that the government's foundation remains strong, and that ODM’s decision to work with President Ruto is resolute. He further urged citizens and political leaders to support the government in its quest to move the country forward. The CS stressed that any noise or opposition from political factions should not worry Kenyans, as ODM is committed to the cause.
The declaration signifies a significant political shift for the ODM party, led by Raila Odinga, who was Ruto’s main rival in the closely contested 2022 election. Wandayi’s comments suggest that ODM’s leadership, including Raila, is now working hand-in-hand with the Ruto administration. This development has led to speculation that Raila himself could play an even larger role in the future of the Kenya Kwanza government, perhaps as a running mate in 2027.
Wandayi gave further insight into why ODM has thrown its weight behind President Ruto. The CS explained that the decision was born out of the necessity to prioritize the country's well-being over partisan politics. "The country is more important than any individual or any party. That is why when President William Ruto invited us into his fold, I accepted the offer very fast," Wandayi stated.
He reiterated that his previous role in the opposition did not deter his commitment to the greater national good. Wandayi noted that the collaboration between ODM and UDA is aimed at fostering national unity and development, which will benefit all Kenyans. He praised Ruto for forming an inclusive government, drawing support from all communities in Kenya. According to Wandayi, this inclusive governance model has enabled the government to focus on key development areas, a factor that convinced ODM to lend its support.
Wandayi also highlighted that the political base in Nyanza, ODM’s traditional stronghold, has embraced the partnership with President Ruto. He pointed out that ODM is known for making firm decisions and standing by them, signaling that ODM’s support for Ruto is not a temporary or superficial alliance.
The political implications of Wandayi’s remarks are far-reaching. While the CS’s statements were clear in their support for Ruto, there have been growing speculations regarding the future of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Rumors have circulated that Gachagua may face impeachment, and that Raila Odinga could be groomed to replace him as Ruto’s running mate in 2027. A recent report from research firm INFOTRAK indicated that 2 percent of respondents would support Raila being on the same ticket as Ruto.
In addition, the same report pointed out that Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki is considered a potential successor to Gachagua should impeachment proceedings move forward. Wandayi’s comments further fuel speculation that Raila Odinga might play a more central role in Ruto’s political future, with the possibility of an unprecedented political alliance between the two former rivals.
