Veteran trade unionist Francis Atwoli, the secretary general of the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU), has made it clear that he is not interested in becoming the Deputy President of Kenya.
This comes after the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua by the National Assembly. Despite Gachagua's impeachment, he continues to hold office while the matter awaits further deliberation in the Senate and, possibly, in the courts.
Gachagua’s impeachment has triggered speculation about potential successors, with some people suggesting that Atwoli could be a suitable candidate for the deputy president role.
However, Atwoli quickly dismissed these claims, stating that his focus is solely on advocating for workers' rights and that he has no desire for any elective or appointive positions in government.
In his response, Atwoli firmly stated, "I am a trade unionist, and that is where my commitment lies. If there is anything coming for the Luhya community, we have known leaders who can represent us in government. I do not want any other position. I am just an elder and an advisor."
His comments come amid discussions that President William Ruto may look to the Western Kenya region for his next deputy. Some political analysts and insiders believe that Ruto may want to reward the Luhya community by appointing a leader from the region to the position of deputy president, following Gachagua's impeachment. Despite this, Atwoli has ruled himself out as a potential candidate, stating that he is not interested in such positions.
Atwoli emphasized that there are already capable political leaders from the Luhya community who can represent the region. He added that he is content with his role as a trade unionist and will continue focusing on workers' rights rather than pursuing elective office.
Meanwhile, the process of determining Gachagua’s fate continues. While the National Assembly voted to impeach him, the final decision rests with the Senate. Gachagua can also challenge the decision in court if he chooses, which could delay the process further. Until the impeachment is finalized, Gachagua remains in office as the Deputy President of Kenya.
Political observers have noted that if Gachagua is eventually removed from office, the race to succeed him will likely involve several prominent figures within President Ruto's inner circle.
Some of the potential candidates being mentioned include Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro. These names represent a mix of leaders from both Mount Kenya and Western Kenya, which are key regions in Kenya’s political landscape.
