‘Hatutaki Siasa Ya kabila’ - Ruto Urges National Unity Amid Gachagua Impeachment Drama

On October 25, 2024, President William Ruto emphasized the importance of unity among Kenyans during the Tobong’u Lore Cultural Festival in Lodwar, Turkana County.

This call for togetherness comes at a time when his former deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, faces impeachment proceedings that have created tension within the government.

During his speech, Ruto stated, “Hatutaki siasa ya ukabila; hatutaki siasa ya magawanyiko; hatutaki siasa ya ubaguzi.” This translates to, “We do not want the politics of tribalism, divisions, and discrimination. We would like to unite as one nation.” He expressed his commitment to uniting Kenyans in order to strengthen the nation’s economy, create job opportunities, and combat hunger.

Gachagua was impeached on October 17, 2024, after the Senate upheld a National Assembly recommendation to remove him from office on multiple grounds, including accusations of fostering ethnic divisions. At the time of the impeachment, Gachagua was hospitalized and unable to defend himself.

Following the impeachment, Gachagua's legal team filed around 30 lawsuits, with the latest development occurring when a three-judge bench, led by Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu, declined to recuse themselves from the case despite Gachagua's lawyers arguing that two judges had conflicts of interest. Presiding judge Eric Ogola stated, “The applications for recusal are hereby disallowed,” allowing Gachagua’s team to file amended petitions.

In another twist, Gachagua’s lawyers secured an order preventing Ruto’s proposed replacement for Gachagua, Kithure Kindiki, from taking office until the legal matters are resolved. After being discharged from the hospital, Gachagua vowed to fight his impeachment, claiming that it was politically motivated and asserting that he was denied his right to a fair hearing.

The political turmoil surrounding Gachagua's impeachment has raised concerns about unity within Ruto's administration. Despite these challenges, Ruto remains focused on promoting a message of solidarity and cooperation among Kenyans. He believes that a united approach will help tackle the pressing issues of the day, such as economic recovery and food security.

The president's insistence on unity is seen as a crucial step toward healing divisions and fostering a collaborative spirit among the citizens. Ruto's remarks resonate with many who yearn for a cohesive national identity, especially amid political strife.

The ongoing situation with Gachagua serves as a test for Ruto's leadership, as he navigates the complexities of governance and strives to maintain a united front within his party and the broader Kenyan populace. The outcome of the legal battles surrounding Gachagua will likely influence the political landscape and the president's ability to promote unity effectively.
