Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka has come forward to support Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who is currently facing impeachment proceedings.
At a press conference held in Nairobi, Kalonzo made it clear that he stands firmly by Gachagua, who has been a target of a motion to remove him from office.
Kalonzo began by praising the 44 members of parliament who voted against the impeachment motion. He expressed disappointment in the 281 MPs who supported the motion, stating,
“Their decision goes against the will of the people.”
He believes that these MPs should have listened to the voices of Kenyans who participated in public consultations.
“The people spoke, and they want Gachagua to stay,” Kalonzo insisted. He argued that the majority of citizens did not support the idea of removing the deputy president.
Kalonzo emphasized that the issue at hand is not just about Gachagua but is part of larger national problems, such as the Adani takeover and the reorganization of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
He said, “Gachagua is being used as a scapegoat to distract from these bigger issues.”
During the press conference, Kalonzo also highlighted that Gachagua has constitutional rights that need protection.
“Every individual, including the deputy president, deserves fair treatment under the law,” he stated firmly.
He pointed out that the impeachment process ignored public opinion and could lead to unrest in the country.
Kalonzo was particularly critical of the MPs who voted for the impeachment, saying they betrayed their constituents. He warned them that their actions would have consequences in the 2027 elections.
“People will remember who stood with them and who didn’t,” he said. He believes that the voters will hold these MPs accountable for their choices.
Kalonzo expressed his hope that the Senate will make a fair decision regarding Gachagua’s impeachment.
“I was impressed by Gachagua’s earlier presentation, and I trust the Senate will do the right thing,” he remarked.
