The deceased, identified as Yvonne Jirangwa, was a 23-year-old trainee nun at the Rongo Parish Sister Convent. She had been missing since Thursday, October 24.
The tragic discovery was made by another nun who was running errands in the convent. Upon finding the body floating in the sewer pit, she immediately alerted the authorities.
Father Gabriel Atieno, the head priest of the Homa Bay Diocese, confirmed the incident and expressed deep sadness over the loss.
He described Yvonne's death as a significant blow to the parish and her family, highlighting her dedication to community outreach programs during her three years of training at the convent.
After Yvonne was reported missing, Father Otieno and other church leaders contacted the Rongo Police Station.
The police quickly launched an investigation to find her. Rongo Sub-County Police Commander Salim Fundi confirmed that they received a report about her disappearance on October 24. After a thorough search, they located her body in the septic tank.
Following the discovery, the police have been working diligently to determine the circumstances surrounding Yvonne’s death.
The body has been transferred to Rosewood Hospital Mortuary for an autopsy to find out the cause of death.
Father Otieno mentioned that they are cooperating with the police and are eager to understand what happened before this tragic event.
The situation has raised concerns about safety within the community, especially in light of recent crime statistics from the National Police Service.
These statistics show a slight increase in murder cases reported from August to October in recent years. So far in 2024, there have been 339 murder cases, slightly higher than the numbers in previous years.
