Hon. Gathoni Wamuchomba, a prominent Member of Parliament from the Mt Kenya region, has voiced her dissatisfaction with how parliament has halted all other legislative activities to focus solely on the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
In a strong statement made on October 2, 2024, Wamuchomba expressed her frustration at how parliament has spent an entire week concentrating on Gachagua’s removal instead of addressing more urgent issues that affect Kenyans directly.
Wamuchomba, who has been a vocal supporter of the Deputy President, was particularly concerned about the amount of money being poured into the impeachment process.
According to her, the resources and attention that are being devoted to this political issue could be better used to address the pressing problems that ordinary Kenyans are facing, especially the unfulfilled promises from the government.
She emphasized that the millions of shillings spent on the impeachment effort could have a more meaningful impact if invested in development projects that improve the lives of citizens.
In her message, Hon. Wamuchomba remarked, "It is disappointing that parliament has paralyzed all other business for a whole week just to spend millions of money trying to impeach one person.
Meanwhile, pensioners and other citizens are crying out for the promises that the government has yet to fulfill." Her frustration points to a broader concern about the current state of governance and the priorities of the legislative body.
The impeachment motion was officially introduced in parliament just the day before, and it has already sparked significant debate. While some MPs have expressed their support for the motion to remove Gachagua, others, like Wamuchomba, believe that the energy and resources being put into this process are misplaced.
Instead of focusing on internal political battles, she argues that parliament should be tackling issues such as economic development, unemployment, and the rising cost of living, which are more immediate concerns for the Kenyan people.
Wamuchomba’s criticism also reflects the growing division within the political landscape. Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has faced increasing pressure in recent months, and his impeachment has only deepened the rifts among political factions.
However, Wamuchomba's stand indicates that not everyone is in favor of this impeachment process, with many preferring that parliament redirect its attention to matters that will benefit the citizens rather than engage in political maneuvering.
She also highlighted the frustration of pensioners, a group that has been particularly vocal about the government’s failure to deliver on its promises.
Pensioners have often found themselves struggling to receive their rightful benefits, and Wamuchomba stressed that it is these kinds of issues that parliament should be addressing, rather than focusing on ousting Gachagua from his position.
Wamuchomba’s remarks have resonated with many Kenyans who feel that the current political environment is overly focused on power struggles rather than the needs of the people.
