Speaking on Monday, October 7, during a press briefing, Gachagua said that such a serious motion could not reach Parliament without the president's endorsement.
Gachagua explained that, in Kenya’s political structure, any significant issue like an impeachment motion has to be reviewed and approved by the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party’s parliamentary group.
He said that only President Ruto could give the final go-ahead for such a motion to proceed.
“The impeachment motion cannot find its way to the National Assembly without the president’s nod, that’s true,” Gachagua remarked.
However, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah quickly refuted these claims, arguing that Members of Parliament (MPs) do not need the president’s permission to table an impeachment motion.
He emphasized that Parliament operates independently when handling such issues. Ichung'wah’s response was a direct contradiction of Gachagua’s claims, adding more confusion to the situation.
In an earlier interview, Gachagua had also stated that for any contentious matter, especially one as serious as impeachment, to reach Parliament, it has to be discussed and sanctioned by the president. He stressed that only President Ruto has the power to allow such motions to progress in Parliament.
Despite the tension surrounding the impeachment motion, Gachagua firmly dismissed rumors that he might step down from his position.
He emphasized his commitment to his role, stating that he was elected by over 7 million Kenyans and would not resign without considering the will of the people.
“There was speculation that I wanted to resign. This is a man elected by 7.2 million Kenyans. How dare you suggest that I can step down without public participation? I have no intention whatsoever to resign from this job. I will fight to the end,” Gachagua affirmed during his press briefing.
