Rigathi Gachagua's Office Disowns Poster Announcing DP's Press Conference, Terms Ot Fake

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's office has denied reports that he would be holding a press conference on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, as suggested by a viral poster circulating online.

The poster claimed Gachagua would address the media, possibly in relation to his ongoing impeachment process.

However, Njeri Rugene, the head of communication in the Deputy President's office, quickly flagged the poster as fake, stating that no such event was scheduled.

This denial comes at a crucial time for Gachagua, who is facing an impeachment process. The Senate is set to begin examining the case against him on Wednesday, October 16, following his impeachment by the National Assembly.

The charges brought against him will be discussed in detail, and witnesses are expected to testify before the Senate. Both the National Assembly and Gachagua's legal team have prepared their materials ahead of the hearings.

In a separate legal battle, Gachagua sought to stop the Senate from proceeding with the impeachment trial. He filed a petition at the High Court, arguing that his constitutional rights had been violated by the National Assembly.

According to Gachagua’s legal team, the impeachment motion was based on unsupported and vague allegations, making the process invalid.

However, his efforts to stop the trial hit a major setback when the High Court, led by Justice Chacha Mwita, dismissed his request.

Justice Mwita ruled that the courts do not have the power to interfere with impeachment proceedings, as they are a constitutional process delegated to the National Assembly and the Senate.

The judge emphasized that the Senate must be allowed to carry out its role in this matter without interference from the judiciary.

As Gachagua prepares for the Senate hearings, his legal team will continue to defend him against the accusations.

The decision by the High Court means that the Senate proceedings will go ahead as planned, and the outcome will determine whether Gachagua remains in office or is removed.
