On October 13, 2024, President William Ruto surprised many when he did not attend a church service in Embu.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua had confirmed his attendance and was expected to share the podium with Ruto. This situation raised eyebrows, especially given the growing tensions between the two leaders.
Many people speculated that Ruto's absence was a deliberate move to avoid appearing alongside Gachagua, especially since there are discussions about Gachagua’s possible impeachment.
Gachagua has been facing scrutiny, and the rumors of a rift between him and Ruto have been circulating for weeks.
Ruto later explained his absence. He stated, “I had a prior commitment at the AIC Milimani Church in Nairobi. They were celebrating their 30th anniversary, and I have a long connection with that congregation.”
He emphasized that his schedule was already set for this event, indicating that he could not attend the service in Embu.
This clarification did little to ease concerns about their relationship. Just weeks before, Gachagua had mentioned that he had been removed from a key State House WhatsApp group.
This group shared important updates about the president's events and engagements. Gachagua expressed frustration, saying,
“Being out of that group makes it hard for me to know what the president is doing. It feels like I am being left out on purpose.”
He also suggested that this exclusion contributed to the misunderstandings about his attendance at key events.
The tensions between Ruto and Gachagua are evident. While Gachagua continues to participate in public events, leading praise songs and showing support for the government, Ruto’s recent actions hint at a desire to distance himself from his deputy.
