Murang'a Governor Irungu Kang'ata's meeting with ODM leader Raila Odinga on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, has stirred speculation among Kenyans about his political ambitions.
Many believe Kang'ata might be eyeing the deputy president's seat, especially with the ongoing impeachment proceedings against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Kang'ata shared the news of the meeting on social media, explaining that they discussed issues related to national cohesion and Kenya’s progress under devolution.
He tweeted, “The Right Honourable former Prime Minister Raila Odinga invited me this morning for consultations.
We had a good discussion on national cohesion and the progress we have made as a country under devolution.”
However, the public is speculating that this meeting could have been about more than just national issues.
Many Kenyans reacted on social media, suggesting that Kang'ata is positioning himself for the deputy president’s role.
Some comments hinted at him seeking Raila's endorsement to replace Gachagua if the impeachment goes through.
One user even congratulated Kang'ata as the “next Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya,” while others offered words of encouragement and support for his future in politics.
Kang'ata is not the only name being mentioned for the deputy president's seat. Other leaders from the Mt. Kenya region, such as Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki and Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, have also been speculated as potential candidates.
There have even been suggestions that Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi could be a contender for the role.
The possibility of Gachagua being replaced has been discussed for some time, with politicians and political analysts weighing in on the potential outcomes.
Recently, Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi, a close ally of President William Ruto, hinted that while Gachagua might be removed, the deputy president's position would likely remain within the Mt. Kenya region.
