Gerald Njoroge Mwangi, popularly known as Mwas, tragically passed away after an accident along Waiyaki Way. He was receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital when he died.
His family faced numerous challenges while organizing his burial, as shared by his brother, Stephen Obwaka, in an interview with TUKO.co.ke.
Initially, the family intended to bury Mwas at their home in Mumias, Kakamega, alongside their late father. However, their stepmother refused this plan, leading to tension within the family.
After much discussion, they decided to honor the stepmother's wishes and laid Mwas to rest in Kikuyu instead.
Obwaka explained that they chose not to contest the burial in court to avoid unnecessary delays and complications.
"We wanted to give our brother a dignified burial next to his father in Mumias, but the stepmother refused, so we let her bury him in Kikuyu," he said.
The burial ceremony was marred by controversy, particularly regarding how Mwas' wife was treated.
Obwaka claimed that she faced harsh treatment from the stepmother and was even driven away during the ceremony.
He expressed his disappointment, saying, "They treated his wife so unfairly. How can someone chase away a woman who had been with her son for four years?"
Gerald's wife had been a source of support for him, especially during his unemployment, yet she was not respected during the burial.
The situation escalated when Gerald's mother accused Super Metro, the company where he worked, of mismanaging funeral funds.
Obwaka defended Super Metro, insisting that they provided KSh 63,000 to help Gerald's wife and son prepare for the burial.
He explained that the family forced her to hand over the money, which caused her great distress. "Super Metro did not mishandle any money. They are completely clean," he affirmed.
Despite the turmoil, Obwaka and the family vowed to support Gerald's wife, acknowledging her as a "good lady."
They expressed regret for not knowing her better before and promised to stand by her during this difficult time. "We cannot abandon her; we will support her because she is a good woman," Obwaka concluded.
