WATCH LIVE; National Assembly Begins Impeachment Process Against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua

On Tuesday, Kenya’s National Assembly resumed its sittings at 9:00 AM to address a significant matter: the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The motion, listed in the Order Paper, aims to remove the Deputy President from office. This process is being conducted in accordance with the National Assembly’s Standing Orders No. 64 and 65, which detail the steps for impeachment proceedings.

The debate over the motion is expected to last the entire day, with various Members of Parliament (MPs) discussing the grounds and evidence presented for Gachagua’s removal.

Later in the day, at around 5:00 PM, the Deputy President will have the opportunity to defend himself before the Assembly, laying out his case to refute the accusations against him.

In a media briefing held on Monday night, Gachagua confirmed that he would attend the session and honor the summons from Parliament.

He provided a brief glimpse of the defense strategy he plans to use to challenge the impeachment motion.

According to Gachagua, he intends to provide evidence that he believes will clear his name and demonstrate to both the MPs and the Kenyan public that the accusations against him are unfounded.

The impeachment process is a significant event in Kenyan politics, as it targets the second-highest office in the country.

The motion’s outcome could have far-reaching effects on the country's political landscape, depending on whether the MPs vote to remove Gachagua from office or allow him to continue in his role.

With the Deputy President expected to speak later in the day, all eyes are now on how the proceedings will unfold and whether Gachagua’s defense will sway the MPs to his side.

The National Assembly’s action on this motion reflects the serious nature of the impeachment process, and it highlights the importance of accountability for public officials in Kenya.

The coming hours will be critical as the MPs debate and ultimately decide Gachagua’s political fate. If the impeachment succeeds, it could lead to a reshuffling of the country’s leadership.
