"We're Overwhelmed" Mombasa Family In Distress After Grade 4 Daughter Accidentally Swallows Needle During Class Activity

A family in Ujamaa Village, Likoni sub-county, is facing a challenging financial and emotional journey after their nine-year-old daughter, Olivia Kerubo, accidentally swallowed a sewing needle during a school activity.

The incident, which happened on October 4, left the young girl in need of urgent medical attention and placed a huge financial burden on her family.

According to Olivia’s mother, Evelyn Moraa, the accident occurred while her daughter was in a practical class at The Sanctuary of Praise Academy.

Evelyn explained that she received an alarming call from her daughter's teacher, informing her about the incident.

Olivia, a Grade 4 pupil, had put the needle in her mouth, and before she knew it, she accidentally inhaled it, causing it to become lodged in her throat.

Evelyn and her family quickly took Olivia to Likoni Sub-county Hospital for immediate care. However, the medical team there could not remove the needle, so they referred her to Coast General Hospital.

Despite initial X-ray treatment and various attempts, the needle remained stuck in Olivia’s throat. The doctors then discharged her with instructions to monitor her condition at home.

Unfortunately, Olivia’s condition worsened over the next few days as she developed a severe cough and other complications. Desperate to save her daughter’s life, Evelyn and her family returned to the hospital.

This time, the doctors admitted Olivia to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where multiple procedures were carried out.

Finally, on October 15, the medical team successfully removed the needle, bringing a huge relief to the worried family.

While the family is grateful that Olivia is now on the path to recovery, they are struggling to cope with a hefty KSh 150,000 medical bill.

Evelyn shared that her husband, who is a hawker, and the family’s limited income make it difficult to cover the hospital expenses. To afford Olivia's treatment, they had to borrow heavily, leading to mounting debts.

“We are overwhelmed with debts,” Evelyn expressed, appealing for financial support from the public to help clear the medical bill.
