The attack occurred on November 28, 2024, while Gachagua was attending the funeral of his close friend, Erastus Nduati.
During the service, a group of goons armed with stones, sticks, machetes, and iron bars disrupted the gathering and began attacking mourners.
Gachagua recounted the terrifying moment, saying that the attackers descended on the mourners, using their weapons to cause chaos.
"They attacked the mourners with the weapons they had, as well as plastic chairs," Gachagua said.
In the ensuing panic, Gachagua attempted to flee to his car, but the attackers followed him, smashing the vehicle with stones and iron bars as he tried to escape.
In his social media post following the incident, Gachagua expressed his frustration with the government's decision to strip him of his security detail.
"It now looks like the decision to withdraw my security was to leave me exposed to this kind of attack," he said.
He further noted that any former deputy president is usually provided with security for their safety, even after leaving office.
Gachagua suggested that the government's move to revoke his security appeared intentional, making him a target.
Despite the attack, Gachagua vowed not to be intimidated. "We will continue standing with Kenyans who need our support, and I will not allow this to stop me from speaking out for the people," he added.
The former deputy president also expressed his disappointment at the distress caused to the family of the deceased, who, despite their profound grief, had to run for safety during the violent altercation.
The incident has sparked mixed reactions across social media.
Some Kenyans expressed sympathy for Gachagua, while others questioned the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The unfolding events have left many wondering about the political tensions that may have contributed to the situation.
