During its 47th graduation ceremony, Daystar University in Nairobi took a moment to honor a local woman, Mama Ibrah, for her outstanding support to students.
Mama Ibrah, who runs a small food stall near the university, has become a beloved figure on campus for her kind-hearted nature.
Known for offering meals to struggling students, she has gained a reputation for looking out for those in need, especially those who cannot afford to buy food.
The university’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Laban Ayiro, highlighted Mama Ibrah's remarkable contributions to the university community.
He shared with the audience that she not only sells food but also goes the extra mile to ensure that vulnerable students have a meal.
"She recognizes those who are extremely vulnerable and who are struggling even to get a meal," Ayiro said during the graduation ceremony.
His words showed how much the university values her support in making sure students are cared for, even outside the classroom.
As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts, Daystar University decided to gift Mama Ibrah KSh 40,000 to help grow her small business.
This generous gesture was met with cheers from the audience. The university’s decision to support Mama Ibrah’s shop shows its commitment to helping those who make a difference in the lives of students.
The honor given to Mama Ibrah has been widely appreciated on social media, with many Kenyans praising Daystar University for recognizing her efforts.
Social media users shared their experiences of how similar "mama mbogas" (local food vendors) have supported them during their time in school.
One user even mentioned a similar person they knew from another university, showing that Mama Ibrah’s story is not unique but one that many can relate to.
Previously, a Daystar University student invited Mama Ibrah to his graduation, acknowledging the kindness she showed him throughout his academic journey.
