Drama Unfolded As Bomet Police Officer Shoots Bar Attendant While Showing Off His Firearm

A tragic incident unfolded at Kapcherany Trading Centre in Bomet County on the evening of November 26, 2024, when a senior police officer accidentally shot a bar attendant while demonstrating his firearm.

The officer, identified as the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) from Trans Nzoia County, was reportedly showing a companion how to operate his gun when it discharged unexpectedly, sending a stray bullet into the bar attendant’s stomach.

The shooting occurred in a social setting where the officer was allegedly trying to impress his companion by displaying how the firearm worked.

Unfortunately, the demonstration went horribly wrong, and the officer's firearm went off, causing the bar attendant to suffer a serious injury.

The attendant, who was caught in the crossfire, was quickly rushed to Litein Hospital for emergency treatment.

The medical team has been working to stabilize his condition, but the situation remains critical as the wound to his stomach is severe.

Following the incident, the Bomet County Deputy Police Commandant, Jamleck Ngaruiya, confirmed the shooting and revealed that the officer had been disarmed and detained for interrogation.

The police immediately secured the area and began gathering witness statements to understand the exact sequence of events that led to the shooting.

Investigations are currently ongoing, and authorities are keen to determine whether negligence or reckless handling of the firearm was involved.

This incident has raised serious concerns about the behavior of law enforcement officers in informal settings, particularly regarding their handling of firearms when they are not engaged in official duties.

The public has voiced alarm over the risks posed by police officers carrying weapons outside of their assigned responsibilities, especially in social gatherings or relaxed settings like bars, where they are not expected to be armed.

The Bomet shooting is not the only recent case raising alarms about police firearms misuse.

Earlier in November, a similar incident occurred in Runyenjes, Embu County, when a police officer allegedly shot and killed one person and injured another at a popular bar.
