A family in Bomet County is mourning the loss of Caren Chepngetich, a woman who passed away after giving birth at Cheptalal Sub-county Hospital.
The tragedy has sparked concerns over the state of healthcare services in rural areas.
Caren was admitted to the hospital on Monday, November 25, and successfully delivered her baby the following morning.
However, her condition quickly worsened as she began to bleed excessively.
The medical staff informed her family that she needed an urgent blood transfusion and should be taken to a better-equipped facility.
The family was promised an ambulance to transfer her, but this hope quickly faded.
When they searched for the ambulance driver, they discovered he was not at the hospital.
Even worse, the ambulance itself had no fuel or a working battery. Hours passed as they waited for help.
A relative offered to pay for the fuel to speed up the process, but the delays continued.
Finally, an ambulance was sent from Longisa Hospital, but by the time it arrived, Caren had already passed away.
Her family described her last moments as painful, with her fainting repeatedly and struggling in distress.
Caren's uncle expressed his anger in an interview, calling the incident a disgrace.
"She was bleeding heavily and needed immediate help, but the ambulance was not working, and the driver was missing. This should not happen to anyone," he said.
Another family member recalled running to plead with hospital staff to act faster, but their efforts were in vain.
They emphasized that such delays cost lives and called for immediate improvements in healthcare services
This tragic case has highlighted the ongoing challenges in Kenya’s healthcare system, particularly in rural areas.
Poor infrastructure, lack of emergency services, and unavailability of essential resources like ambulances are putting lives at risk.
Caren’s story is one of many similar cases where patients die due to avoidable delays.
Her death has left her family devastated and has sparked calls for urgent reforms to ensure no other family faces such a tragedy.
