COTU Secretary-General Francis Atwoli has suggested that Kenya should remove the presidential term limit, arguing that it causes challenges for effective leadership.
Atwoli believes that the current five-year term limit is too short for a president to focus on long-term development, leading to leaders prioritizing politics over the country's well-being.
He explained that presidents often spend too much time preparing for the next election rather than addressing critical national issues.
In an interview with Citizen TV, Atwoli pointed out that the political focus in Kenya has shifted to constant campaigning, which dominates the country's daily discussions.
He stated, "Every morning is politics, from morning to evening." According to Atwoli, this creates instability because leaders are constantly worried about their next election rather than focusing on improving the country.
Atwoli compared Kenya to Uganda, which has had a long-serving president, Yoweri Museveni.
He argued that Uganda has not faced the same crises as Kenya, suggesting that extended leadership may contribute to stability.
He also mentioned that Europe’s development is largely due to its leaders having long tenures, which allows them to implement lasting policies.
Atwoli believes that Kenya would benefit from a similar approach, where leaders are able to focus on the country's growth without the pressure of upcoming elections.
The trade unionist emphasized that the removal of the presidential term limit would allow leaders to prioritize national development.
He suggested that it would shift the political landscape from one dominated by elections to one focused on improving infrastructure, education, healthcare, and other key sectors.
Atwoli’s comments come at a time when Kenyan politics is highly polarized, with many discussions revolving around the upcoming 2027 General Election.
He also predicted that President William Ruto would easily win the 2027 polls, citing his strong political alliances, including with opposition leader Raila Odinga.
However, his suggestion to remove the presidential term limit has sparked debate.
