Lyn Linet, a small-scale businesswoman from Nairobi, said she was surprised to receive such a large amount from an unknown number.
Despite the temptation, Lyn quickly decided to return the money, stating that it was not hers to keep.
Speaking in an interview, Lyn recalled the moment she received the unexpected transaction on November 17, 2024.
She explained that while she was minding her business, the M-Pesa message appeared on her phone.
Moments later, the sender contacted her to request a reversal. Without hesitation, Lyn agreed, and the reversal process began immediately.
After the funds were successfully returned, the sender offered Lyn a KSh 1,000 reward as a token of appreciation.
While the amount may seem small compared to the KSh 250,000 she returned, Lyn said she was content because she had done the right thing.
“The money was not meant for me. I believe in honesty, so I decided to return it,” she explained.
Lyn’s actions sparked mixed reactions among Kenyans on social media.
Some praised her for her integrity, describing her as a role model in an increasingly dishonest world.
Esther Kuvochi, a netizen, commented, “This was a test, and you passed! Well done!”
Another user, Liz Lizzy, encouraged people always to allow reversals, warning that failing to do so could lead to legal trouble.
On the other hand, some netizens joked about what they would have done if they were in her position.
Gloria Wanjii humorously claimed, “I would already be on my way to Timbuktu with that money!”
Others shared similar sentiments, saying the tough economic times would have made it hard to return such a large sum.
