Residents of Nyatike Sub-county in Migori County are in shock after the body of a young boy, estimated to be between six and eight years old, was discovered at Kimambra Beach on Thursday, November 28, 2024.
The boy’s body was found by fishermen during their routine fishing activities.
The discovery has raised concerns among the local community about the safety of children around water bodies in the region.
The fishermen, who were going about their usual work, stumbled upon the boy’s body while at the beach.
Mark Maloba, the chairperson of the Migori County Beach Management Unit, confirmed the discovery and explained that the body had been left at the beach while authorities were informed.
He expressed deep concern about the increasing number of child drownings in the area, particularly in rivers and lakes.
Maloba urged parents to be more vigilant and ensure that their children are kept away from dangerous water bodies to prevent such tragedies from occurring.
Currently, efforts are underway to identify the boy’s family. Community leaders and local authorities are collaborating to trace the boy’s relatives, but as of now, no one has come forward to claim the body.
Maloba appealed to the community to report any missing children to help with the identification process.
This tragic incident is not isolated. Just a week ago, a four-year-old child drowned in River Kuja at Macalder, also in Nyatike Sub-county.
These incidents have sparked an urgent call for increased awareness about water safety, especially in areas close to lakes and rivers.
Many families living near such water sources are being reminded to keep their children safe, as drownings have become an all-too-common occurrence.
As investigations continue, police are expected to take custody of the body to determine the exact circumstances of the boy’s death.
The community is urged to stay alert and report any information that could help identify the boy’s family.
