Winnie Byanyima, the wife of Ugandan opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, has spoken out following the arrest and trial of her husband.
Dr. Besigye, who traveled to Kenya to attend a book launch by Martha Karua, was detained and later transferred to Uganda.
He is now facing charges of illegal firearm possession in a military court, raising concerns about the fairness of the process.
According to Winnie, Dr. Besigye and his colleague, Haji Obed Kamulegeya, rented an apartment in Nairobi on Saturday, November 16.
Before heading out for a meeting, they shared their location with a comrade for safety reasons.
They planned to return after the meeting, but their prolonged absence raised alarms.
Efforts to contact them were unsuccessful as their phones went off, leaving family and friends in distress.
Winnie revealed that it was not until Tuesday, November 19, that information began to emerge about Dr. Besigye’s whereabouts.
Leaks indicated that he was being held at Makindye Military Police Barracks in Uganda.
Later, a senior army officer confirmed to her that he would face trial in a military court.
Winnie expressed frustration over the decision to try her husband in a military court rather than a civilian one, questioning the legality and fairness of the proceedings.
Despite the challenges, Winnie has vowed to stand by her husband and fight for justice. “I believe he is innocent.
We should have access to him, and he should be tried as a civilian,” she stated.
She emphasized her commitment to supporting Dr. Besigye and ensuring that his rights are respected throughout the process.
On Wednesday, November 20, Dr. Besigye appeared in court under tight security.
The prosecution alleged that he and Kamulegeya were found in possession of illegal firearms while in Nairobi.
The court ordered their detention at Luzira Prison until December 2 to allow investigations to continue.
The arrest and trial of Dr. Besigye have sparked widespread attention, with many questioning the handling of the case and the use of a military court.
