Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka has raised serious concerns about the possibility of election manipulation in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka (SKM) Command Center, Kalonzo accused President William Ruto's government of planning to rig the elections in favor of the ruling party.
Kalonzo claimed that the government is intentionally delaying the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), a crucial body responsible for conducting free and fair elections.
He argued that this delay is part of a wider scheme to undermine the democratic process and manipulate the election results.
According to Kalonzo, the failure to form a fully functional IEBC commission will create an environment where the elections can be easily rigged.
One of the key issues Kalonzo highlighted was the proposed Elections (Amendment) Bill 2024.
This bill, which is currently being discussed in the Senate, aims to stop the live streaming of election results.
Kalonzo described this move as an attempt to hide the true results of the elections and prevent Kenyans from witnessing real-time updates as the votes are counted.
The current law allows Kenyans to access election results instantly through the IEBC's official website and live streaming.
Kalonzo warned that the government's support for the bill is a step towards stealing the 2027 elections.
Furthermore, Kalonzo expressed concern about the government's failure to meet constitutional timelines for important processes such as boundary delimitation.
According to the Constitution, the IEBC must review constituency boundaries every eight to twelve years.
However, the timeline for this review ended in March 2024, and there is still no functioning IEBC to carry out the task.
Kalonzo said this delay is causing a constitutional crisis and undermines the credibility of the upcoming elections.
Kalonzo also accused the government of interfering with the selection process of IEBC commissioners through legal battles.
He called for a swift resolution to ensure that the election commission is reconstituted and ready to oversee a free and fair election.
