"Body Leaves Lee Funeral Home" University Student In Court For Posting This Fake News On X About President Ruto

A university student, David Oaga Mokaya, has been charged with spreading false information after posting a misleading image on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

Mokaya appeared before the Milimani Law Courts on November 18, 2024, where he was accused of sharing an image that falsely claimed to show President William Ruto being transported in a funeral procession.

The image, which showed a casket draped in the Kenyan flag and surrounded by military officers in ceremonial uniforms, was manipulated to create the illusion that it involved the President.

The incident occurred on November 13, 2024, when Mokaya posted the image under the name “Landlord @bozgabi.”

The post included false details, including a fabricated date, to make it appear genuine. The image misled the public into believing that it was of President Ruto, which sparked concern due to the potential impact of spreading such false information.

The court was informed that the image was not real and that the student’s actions violated laws aimed at controlling the spread of disinformation, which could cause unrest or confusion among the public.

Mokaya pleaded not guilty to the charges of publishing false information.

The prosecution emphasized the seriousness of the offence, stating that spreading misleading or fake information online can have serious consequences.

The court acknowledged the gravity of the situation, highlighting that disinformation can threaten public order and trust in institutions.

Mokaya was granted a bond of KSh 100,000 or an alternative cash bail of KSh 50,000. The case is set to continue with a hearing scheduled for December 4, 2024.
