Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has honored a promise he made to St. James Cathedral in Kiambu by donating KSh 1 million.
The funds, delivered by Senator Karungo Thang’wa, were designated specifically for painting the church.
Senator Thang’wa, who presented the donation, revealed that Gachagua made the pledge during a visit to the church in October.
Although the money was handed over recently, the senator stated that Gachagua reminded him of the importance of fulfilling promises.
“A promise is a debt,” he said, emphasizing the need to keep commitments.
The provost of St. James Cathedral expressed gratitude for the donation.
He praised Gachagua and Thang’wa for their generosity, describing them as “great men” who have positively impacted the church.
The provost extended his heartfelt thanks to Gachagua for supporting the church's development and prayed for blessings upon him.
This donation comes amidst public debate about donations made by political leaders to churches.
Critics argue that some of these contributions raise questions about their sources, while others view them as attempts to gain public favor.
Senator Thang’wa addressed these concerns by referencing recent events where church donations were rejected, including one involving President William Ruto and the Catholic Church.
He remarked, “You cannot accuse someone of stealing your goat and then accept bread from them later. First, solve the accusations before accepting any gift.”
This statement reflects the growing skepticism among Kenyans regarding the intentions behind political donations.
Despite these criticisms, some leaders, like President Ruto, have defended their acts of giving, citing spiritual reasons.
Ruto recently shared that he has been donating to churches for over 30 years and believes in the biblical principle of generosity.
While some see these acts as a way to support community development, others remain cautious, urging transparency and accountability in how leaders manage public and private funds.
For St. James Cathedral, however, the donation marks a positive step in their journey of growth and development, as they work towards completing the church’s painting project. The provost expressed hope that the generosity shown by leaders would inspire others to support similar causes.
