The controversy began when Aoko shared photos from a TED event in 2022, where Mwangi was seen with Gates in Vancouver.
Aoko, who is known for her bold opinions, suggested that Mwangi's involvement with Gates was a sign that he lacked genuine impact in the fight against poor governance.
The photos were taken during a TED event, where Mwangi was a senior fellow and had the chance to meet Gates, who was exhibiting his work.
The online clash intensified after Francis Gaitho, another social media personality, criticized Mwangi’s explanation of his encounter with Gates, accusing him of being disingenuous.
Gaitho’s comments led to further attacks from Aoko, who seemed to question Mwangi’s authenticity and motives.
In his response, Mwangi defended himself, stating that his critics were simply bitter.
Without directly naming Aoko or Gaitho, he addressed the criticism collectively, saying, "I hear this Bill Gates's photos from 2022 are giving people sleepless nights.
I’m a senior TED fellow, and in 2022, I was in TED Vancouver, where Gates had an exhibition. Love your child so that they don’t end up tweeting hate daily out of bitterness."
Mwangi’s response sparked a wave of reactions on social media, with many defending him.
Some users advised him to ignore the negativity, while others expressed support for his achievements and criticized Aoko’s approach.
One commenter, @Dr_F_Francis, told Mwangi to ignore the critics, saying, “Let the dogs bark.”
Meanwhile, @kaybe_kb thanked Mwangi for the clarification, stating that it made them reconsider their thoughts on him.
This isn’t the first time that Boniface Mwangi and Maverick Aoko have clashed online.
Both have strong opinions on issues of governance and social justice, and their disagreements often lead to heated discussions.
