Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse is set to take over as Chair of the Budget and Appropriations Committee in the National Assembly.
This anticipated move comes amidst a significant reorganisation targeting allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
The shake-up aims to reshape the leadership of influential committees following Gachagua’s impeachment.
Mutuse’s role in successfully leading the impeachment of the deputy president has elevated his profile.
The historic move marked the first time a sitting deputy president was removed under Kenya’s 2010 Constitution.
His newfound prominence has positioned him as a trusted leader, making him a top candidate for this critical role.
The Budget and Appropriations Committee is a powerful body that oversees the country’s financial planning, making its leadership a key political position.
Currently, Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro holds the chairmanship of the Budget Committee.
However, his position is under threat due to his perceived hesitation during Gachagua's impeachment process.
Nyoro, a loyal ally of President William Ruto, faced criticism for his lack of active support during this significant political event.
Reports suggest that his failure to take a definitive stance contributed to his potential removal from the committee's leadership.
Sources indicate that President Ruto is also considering Molo MP Kuria Kimani for the position to balance regional political interests.
If Kimani is chosen, Mutuse may instead take over the Roads and Transport Committee, currently chaired by Ndia MP George Kariuki Macharia.
The leadership changes do not stop at the Budget Committee. Other allies of Gachagua are also being targeted for removal from their posts.
These include Gathoni Wamuchomba of the Constitutional Implementation Committee, James Gakuya from the Trade and Industry Committee, and Nimrod Mbai of the Public Petitions Committee.
Additionally, Vincent Musyoka, Kareke Mbiuki, Wanjiku Muhia, and Johana Ng’eno are also likely to face the axe.
This ongoing shake-up highlights the shifting power dynamics within the National Assembly.
If Mutuse takes up the leadership of the Budget Committee, it will mark a pivotal moment for Kenya’s financial oversight and planning.
