Residents of Kitengela, Nairobi, were left in shock and sadness on Monday when a newborn baby boy was discovered abandoned in an apartment garbage pit.
The baby, wrapped in a sack, was found by a waste collector who was sorting through trash.
The collector quickly raised an alarm, calling attention to the heartbreaking situation and alerting both the residents and the apartment’s caretaker, Matthew Muthosi.
Muthosi described the scene as distressing. "The garbage is collected here at a common point before being taken away by the town garbage truck," he explained.
The baby appeared healthy and is believed to have been born only hours before being left in the trash. The swift response of the good Samaritan helped ensure the infant received immediate attention.
Local police arrived soon after and transported the baby to a nearby medical facility for evaluation and care.
The news of the abandoned infant has sparked concern and reflection within the community.
Many residents are left wondering what could drive someone to abandon a newborn in such a manner.
The local elder, Erastus Karanja, 78, expressed his sorrow over the incident and called on women facing difficult circumstances to seek alternative solutions.
"If you can’t care for a child, give them to a family member, or an adoption center, or talk to someone for help. Do not discard a life," he urged.
Karanja emphasized that support is available for mothers who feel overwhelmed and that there are resources, such as registered children's homes, where newborns can be placed safely.
His plea is a reminder of the importance of community support and open dialogue for those struggling with new motherhood.
He hopes that no mother in the community feels so desperate that she believes abandoning her child is the only option.
This incident has led to a broader discussion on the importance of resources for new mothers and the need to raise awareness about safe places for unwanted babies.
The police have launched an investigation to find the mother of the baby, aiming to understand the circumstances that led to this act.
