Ruto's Senior Chief Advisor Defends Bishops After Criticising Govt, Rejecting President’s Millions

Moses Kuria, a senior advisor to President William Ruto, has supported the Catholic Church’s decision to return donations made by the president.

The Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi recently rejected millions of shillings pledged by Ruto during a church service in Soweto, Embakasi East, citing concerns about the independence of the church.

The church leaders, through the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB), criticized the government on November 14 for poor governance and unfulfilled promises.

They highlighted inefficiencies in various government ministries and called for urgent reforms.

Bishop Philip Anyolo of the Nairobi Archdiocese instructed the Soweto church to return the money, emphasizing that the church should remain free from political influence.

President Ruto had pledged KSh 5 million for the construction of a residence for the local cleric, KSh 500,000 for the church choir, and KSh 300,000 for children’s uniforms.

Governor Johnson Sakaja had also donated KSh 200,000, which the archdiocese announced would be refunded.

Bishop Anyolo stated that all donations must comply with the Public Fundraising Appeals Bill 2024, which requires prior approval for fundraising activities.

Reacting to the controversy, Moses Kuria, a devout Catholic, defended the church’s decision.

He shared his strong faith in the Catholic Church’s teachings, saying, “The Catholic Church is always right.

If it appears to be wrong, refer to Rule Number 1—they are always right.” Kuria’s statement underlined his respect for the church’s moral authority and its commitment to ethical practices.

The rejection of the donations and the bishops’ public criticism of the government drew mixed reactions.

Some government officials viewed the move as unnecessary, while others supported the church for maintaining its integrity.

The bishops argued that political contributions could compromise the church’s independence and distract leaders from addressing critical national issues such as corruption and poverty.

Moses Kuria’s support for the Catholic Church highlights its role in promoting accountability and justice.

Despite being part of the government, Kuria acknowledged the legitimacy of the church’s concerns and its right to reject funds that could compromise its mission.
