Mugendi's death came after he was arrested for allegedly murdering his wife, an incident that shocked the community.
According to Mwea West Sub-county Police Commander Rashid Ali, Mugendi was arrested on November 17, 2024, for allegedly fatally stabbing his wife, Catherine Wanjiku.
The couple had been in a domestic dispute, which tragically escalated to violence, leading to Wanjiku's untimely death.
The police swiftly moved in and arrested Mugendi, who was then taken into custody at Kiamuciri Police Station, located in the Kagio area.
Mugendi was subsequently presented in court, where the authorities sought and received permission to hold him for further investigation.
He was remanded until December 9, 2024, to allow for more time to gather evidence and conduct a thorough investigation into his wife’s death.
The details of the dispute that led to the fatal incident remain unclear, but the community has been left in shock by the loss of both the husband and wife.
However, tragedy struck once again when, on the day of his wife’s funeral, Mugendi was found dead in his police cell.
His death came as a shock to many, including his family and local authorities, who are now seeking answers regarding the circumstances of his passing.
The police station has initiated an internal review to determine the cause of death.

While Mugendi’s death in police custody raises questions, his wife’s death has also left many in the community mourning the loss of a loved one.
