Mugure, who was born with a hearing impairment, suffered severe neglect as her mother confined her to the house, isolating her from the outside world.
She was left without proper care, food, or sunlight, which affected her health and development.
When Mugure was rescued, she appeared very frail, with brittle bones that made it difficult for her to walk without support.
According to Njeri wa Migwi Mwangi, the rescuer, Mugure’s condition was heartbreaking. "She was sometimes chained to a seat and not allowed to go outside.
Her bones were so weak that she could not walk on her own. She was also left in her own waste for a long time," said Mwangi.
Mugure’s speech has also been affected by the years of isolation. Neighbors who knew her before her confinement shared that she used to be vocal, but now she only makes guttural sounds.
Additionally, her skin developed scales, and she had oral thrush, a condition caused by poor hygiene.
Once rescued, Mugure was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment.
The rescue team reported the case to Kihara Police Station, and plans were made to file charges against her mother for neglect.
Mwangi, who led the rescue operation, emphasized the need for urgent medical supplies to aid in Mugure’s recovery.
"She requires medication, supplements, a walker to help her move, diapers, and a portaloo for toileting," she said.
Mugure’s case highlights the importance of disability rights and the need for parents to support and care for children with disabilities.
National Disability Rights Advocate Jonathan Metet condemned the actions of Mugure's mother, stressing that children with disabilities have the right to life and should be treated with dignity.
This shocking incident has brought attention to the issue of child abuse and neglect, particularly concerning children with disabilities.
Efforts are now underway to raise funds for Mugure’s care. Donations can be made through Paybill number 510800 or M-Pesa line 0718158400.
