While the government praised the initiatives for promoting economic growth and providing housing opportunities, some residents were less impressed, expressing concerns about the impact and accessibility of these projects.
During his address, President Ruto emphasized that SHA and Affordable Housing are cornerstones of his administration’s efforts to address the nation’s housing crisis.
He stated that the programs aim to provide quality, affordable homes to Kenyans while creating jobs in the construction and related sectors.
According to the President, these housing projects will stimulate local economies, improve living standards, and reduce the prevalence of informal settlements in urban areas.
However, Embu residents were quick to raise concerns about the affordability and accessibility of these homes.
They argued that many low-income families, who are supposed to be the main beneficiaries of the program, may still find the housing costs too high.
One resident commented, “We appreciate the effort, but many of us can’t afford the houses, and we feel left out of this initiative.”
This sentiment reflects a growing concern among citizens that the projects may be catering more to middle-income earners than the low-income families who struggle the most with housing issues.
Another pressing issue raised was the transparency of the selection process for housing allocations.
Some residents claimed that they are unsure of how beneficiaries are chosen, leading to fears that the system may favor well-connected individuals over those who genuinely need affordable housing.
A local leader expressed frustration, saying, “We want fairness in this process, and we need clear guidelines so that those who deserve housing get a chance.”
Additionally, some residents are skeptical about the job opportunities promised by the President.
While the construction sector has seen growth, locals feel that the job distribution has not been as inclusive as initially pledged.
