According to the senator, the move appears to be a public relations stunt and does not address the real issues affecting ordinary Kenyans.
The canceled partnership involved projects with the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) and the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA).
These projects aimed to upgrade power transmission infrastructure and modernize the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
However, during his State of the Nation address on November 21, 2024, President Ruto announced the immediate termination of the deal, instructing government agencies to find new, reliable partners.
Kajwang, a member of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), questioned the timing and purpose of the cancellation.
He argued that while the deal might have been controversial, the government’s sudden decision to drop it seems more like a public relations exercise than a meaningful step to improve the lives of Kenyans.
"The president’s speech painted a very rosy picture of the economy," Kajwang said. "But for most Kenyans, the reality is very different.
People are struggling with the high cost of living, and canceling this deal does not solve their immediate problems."
Kajwang also criticized the government for defending the Adani partnership before abruptly canceling it.
"Why was the deal initially supported by senior officials if it wasn’t beneficial?" he asked, adding that this inconsistency raises questions about the government's priorities.
Meanwhile, Nelson Amenya, a Kenyan based in France, expressed his excitement over the president’s decision.
Amenya, who had earlier exposed details of the Adani deal, celebrated the announcement as a victory for accountability.
Although the cancellation has received mixed reactions, many Kenyans agree that the government needs to focus on pressing issues like inflation, unemployment, and the cost of basic goods.
