On Tuesday, November 19, 2024, a deadly fire swept through Kitui village in Majengo, Kamukunji Constituency.
The fire claimed the lives of six people and left over 100 families without homes.
Among the victims was Metrine Muhonja, who lost her husband and three young children in the tragic blaze.
According to Muhonja, she had stepped outside to collect clothes from the line when she first noticed the flames.
She rushed to re-enter her house to save her family, but the fire had already spread too quickly.
Her neighbors tried to restrain her as the fire became uncontrollable. "I went outside to remove clothes and when I returned, the fire was too much.
I attempted to get into the house to save my family but was unable," she said with great sorrow.
Inside the house, her husband and children were sleeping when the fire engulfed their home.
Muhonja’s husband, holding their children, was unable to escape the flames.
The children, aged six, four, and one, perished alongside their father.
Muhonja was left standing outside, helpless, watching as the fire consumed everything in its path.
The cause of the fire is believed to be an electrical fault in one of the residences.
Witnesses reported that the fire started around 7 pm and quickly spread to neighboring homes.
Despite efforts by local residents to put out the flames, it was only with the help of the Nairobi City County Fire Department and community disaster response teams that the fire was eventually contained.
The Kenya Red Cross Society has expressed its commitment to supporting the affected families during this difficult time.
They are working alongside local authorities to provide relief to those who have lost their homes and loved ones.
