The donations were given to the Soweto Catholic Church, but Anyolo rejected them, following guidelines set by the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB).
The KCCB discourages political donations and the use of church events for political self-promotion.
On November 18, 2024, Anyolo announced that the church would return KSh 2.6 million from Ruto and KSh 200,000 from Sakaja.
He also mentioned that the church would not accept further donations from politicians, including Ruto’s pledge of KSh 3 million and a bus for the church.
In a statement on November 30, Anyolo confirmed that the money had already been returned.
"We are ready and willing and have returned the money," he said.
However, Anyolo did not respond to any political backlash or criticism.
He explained that he is not a politician and does not wish to engage in political matters publicly.
"I’m not responding to politicians. We have a way of handling matters with them," he added.
This decision by Archbishop Anyolo is not new. In the past, he has rejected donations from politicians.
In 2019, he returned a KSh 4 million Mitsubishi Pajero gift from Ruto when the deputy president was accused of using public funds for personal gain.
Anyolo's actions have sparked mixed reactions from Kenyans. Some praised him for adhering to the church’s guidelines, while others questioned the decision.
Some people suggested that the money could have been better used to support the needy, while others felt the church was right in rejecting any attempts to use it for political gain.
Despite the mixed reactions, Anyolo emphasized the importance of listening to the needs of the people and ensuring that the church's administration stays on track.
