Abel Kimutai, a former investigator with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), has denied accusations linking him to a series of abductions that have recently shocked the nation.
The allegations emerged after social media posts, which accused Kimutai of leading a syndicate responsible for forcibly disappearing government critics.
"I have no connection to these abductions. I was only a fraud investigator at DCI, and I resigned back in 2022," Kimutai said in a statement through his lawyer. "The claims being spread about me are false and dangerous."
The controversy began after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, in a press conference on December 27, hinted at the existence of a special unit operating outside the regular security forces, tasked with abducting individuals critical of the government.
Gachagua mentioned an individual named "Abel," leading some social media users to quickly link Kimutai to the abduction claims.
Kimutai’s name was soon shared across platforms, with some users going as far as publishing his photos and personal details, accusing him of running the abduction squad.
"I never expected this kind of attention. It's putting my life at risk," Kimutai added, referring to the public anger surrounding the issue.
In response to the damaging posts, Kimutai has taken legal action against two individuals Daniel Onyango and @DanChepta whose accounts shared the accusations.
"Their actions are a clear violation of the law. They have defamed me and put my safety in jeopardy," said Kimutai.
Through his lawyer, he has filed a formal complaint with the DCI, urging the authorities to investigate the individuals responsible for the online harassment.
The wave of abductions has raised serious concerns in Kenya. Since December 21, at least five people have gone missing, including bloggers Peter Muteti and Billy Mwangi, as well as cartoonist Gideon Kibet, known for his anti-government caricatures.
Their disappearances have led to growing calls for accountability, with many citizens demanding action from the government.
Despite these events, the National Police Service (NPS) has distanced itself from the abductions, with Inspector General Douglas Kanja stating that the police force strictly follows established procedures and does not engage in extrajudicial actions.
As the investigation continues, Kimutai remains determined to clear his name.
"I will not rest until the truth is revealed and those spreading lies about me are held accountable," he concluded.
