After 12 long years, Wanjiku was found dead, far from the family that had tirelessly searched for her.
The news has left her parents devastated, especially after they had hoped for a reunion.
Wanjiku’s story began in 2012, when she left home after completing her Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).
Against her parents' wishes, she sought employment as a house help. This decision marked the beginning of a series of disappearances.
Despite efforts to find her, she remained elusive, changing her name each time and vanishing without a trace.
In 2015, her mother managed to trace her to Nyeri, where she had been working as a household help.
The mother brought her back home, but Wanjiku disappeared again, leaving her family in despair. Despite this, her parents never gave up on their search.
While away from home, Wanjiku met a man from Kiambu, and they eventually married. Together, they had three children.
However, whenever her husband or his family inquired about her background or where she came from, Wanjiku would become upset and withdraw. She rarely discussed her past, which further strained the relationship.
In her later years, Wanjiku began to experience health issues, including severe headaches and stomach pains.
She passed away quietly in her sleep, leaving her children confused when they tried to wake her.
The children initially thought she was just sleeping, unaware that their mother had died. It wasn’t until a relative went to check on her that they discovered the sad truth.
In the wake of her death, the family reached out to philanthropist Mercy Nungari, who had been helping search for Wanjiku.
Through Nungari's assistance and the support of social media, they were able to contact Wanjiku's parents, who had long awaited news.
