Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has shared the main reason why he avoided involvement in the impeachment motion targeting Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
According to Babu, his decision was influenced by his long-term political plans, which he believes require strategic alliances and careful navigation.
Speaking to journalists, Babu revealed his ambition to contest for the Nairobi City County gubernatorial seat in 2027.
To strengthen his chances, he plans to team up with a deputy governor from the Kikuyu community.
"Nairobi is a melting pot of all Kenyan communities," he said. "To lead effectively, you must represent this diversity.
I intend to partner with a Kikuyu deputy governor to ensure inclusivity and a broader appeal."
Babu emphasized that his decision to keep off the impeachment debate was not a sign of indifference but a strategic move to avoid alienating potential supporters.
“Politics is about numbers,” he explained. “Engaging in divisive battles, especially those targeting leaders from influential communities, might jeopardize my vision for Nairobi. I must think ahead.”
The impeachment motion, which some leaders have pushed to discuss Gachagua’s leadership, has divided opinions across the political spectrum.
While some lawmakers actively supported or opposed the motion, Babu opted for neutrality.
“I respect everyone’s right to express their views, but for me, the focus is on uniting people, not dividing them,” he stated.
When asked whether avoiding such motions could portray him as non-committal, Babu was quick to respond.
“Leadership is not about making noise or seeking attention. It’s about strategy. My goal is to deliver to my constituents and position myself for the future.”
He also assured his supporters that his commitment to representing Embakasi East remains unwavering, even as he prepares for a larger political role.
“My track record speaks for itself. I have always fought for the people, and I will continue to do so,” he added confidently.
Babu’s remarks have sparked discussions about his potential gubernatorial bid, with many commending his foresight.
Others, however, remain skeptical, arguing that his neutrality might alienate him from those who expect bold leadership.
Only time will tell if his calculated decision will pay off as he eyes the leadership of Nairobi. “This is just the beginning. Watch this space,” he concluded.
